A poem

In this week of remembrance I was thinking about how, nearly a hundred years since WW1 began, so many young boys are still taught to think that war and soldiering is exciting through toys, films and video games. How the ‘old lie’ persists. I try imagine a different future.

Remembrance, 11th of November 2113

Imagine a future:

No gender-gifts,
Toys as guns.

Or killing coded
To a game.

Kids killing,
a medal to share.

No sons sign up
For boots and bed

Then perish in pain
On a desert plain.

No toy soldiers,
Boys with guns.

No more remembrance.
