a feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause.
“an air of melancholy surrounded him”

MELANCHOLY is one of my favourite words/moods. It is beautiful and strange.
It’s like staring out the window at the moon with the lights off. I’m sure you know that feeling.
Two recent creations exude this wonderful quality. They draw you into it. Help you find it.
1. Ultraviolence by Lana Del Ray.
‘Ultraviolence is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey, released on June 13, 2014 by Polydor and Interscope Records.’Wikipedia
A truly wonderful album.
Lana doesn’t sing songs, she tells stories through music and words.
Think Flash Fiction. Poetry.
Her voice is endlessly surprising.
Pure atmosphere and melancholy.
An album you wish you could live inside.
Stand out track: Brooklyn Baby.
2. Only Lovers a Left Alive directed by Jim Jarmusch. Staring Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt.
‘Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier, an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister. Can these wise but fragile outsiders continue to survive as the modern world collapses around them?’
Finally a film arrives that offers surprise.
It breaks every rule of modern movie making.
Nothing much happens, the central characters don’t change.
Time moves slowly.
It’s a film that creates a mood of melancholy and sticks with it all the way through.
A truly great film, a film you want to live in.
