The Agony and the Ego

Having finished with Graham Greene I am now reading an interesting collection of essays on the art and strategy of writing fiction edited by Claire Boylan. It includes essays by Hilary Mantel, John Banville, Malcolm Bradbury, and many others. In them, they describe different aspects of their writing process with lots of unique insights.

For example, Jane Gardam says,

The odd thing about this book is I bought it in 1995, in a first attempt to write fiction but I wasn’t ready then. It took almost another twenty years for me to find my way back to writing. I needed more time.

I recently rediscovered the book in my parent’s attic and it makes a sense now it never made back then.

Anyone else had a similar experience?
